Injecting caste into the campus
Before diving into the raging UGC controversy gripping the nation, I would like to share a personal note as a teacher-one that I often repeat to my students.
The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), a leading institution for Journalism and Mass Communication, has been declared a deemed to be university under the distinct category by the government.
The step has been taken following an advice given to this effect to the Ministry of Education by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

“The declaration extends to IIMC New Delhi and its five regional campuses located in Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir), Amravati (Maharashtra), Aizawl (Mizoram), Kottayam (Kerala), and Dhenkanal (Odisha),” an official press note said.

With this new status, the IIMC is now authorised to offer degrees, including doctoral degrees.
